Sylmar Man Charged with Murder, Lewd Act Upon Child

A man who was arrested after barricading himself for hours inside a Sylmar home last week was charged today with murder, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Salvador Sanchez (dob 4/11/82) of Sylmar faces one felony count each of murder, injuring a girlfriend, assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats, four counts of assault with a firearm and seven counts of lewd act upon a child, 14 years old.

Deputy District Attorney Julie Kramer said the charges against Sanchez include special allegations of using a shotgun as a deadly weapon and inflicting great bodily injury under circumstances involving domestic violence.

Arraignment is scheduled today in Department S of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, San Fernando Branch.

On May 28, Sanchez reportedly approached and pointed a shotgun at four individuals and then approached and fatally shot Sergio Tabares, 21, at a park in Sylmar, the prosecutor said. The next day, the defendant is charged with assaulting a 14-year-old girl with whom he had an allegedly illegal sexual relationship, the prosecutor added.

Sanchez was arrested on June 27 after a long standoff with police.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of more than 100 years to life in state prison. The prosecutor will request bail be set at more than $2.5 million.

Case PA091223 remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, Valley Bureau.
