Man Sentenced to Prison for West Covina Police Pursuit, Crash

A 28-year-old man was sentenced today to 24 years in state prison after he was involved in a police pursuit that resulted in a three-car collision injuring nine people, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

On July 26, a jury found Robert Anthony Lopez of La Puente guilty of three counts in case KA113053: fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle causing serious bodily injury, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury within 10 years of another DUI offense, and driving with a .08 percent blood alcohol content causing injury within 10 years of another DUI offense.

Jurors also found true special allegations that the defendant was previously convicted of driving with a .08 percent blood alcohol content or more and reckless driving in 2015.

The defendant pleaded no contest to a count of driving when privilege suspended or revoked after a prior offense at an earlier court date.

Deputy District Attorney Lauren Guber, who prosecuted the case, said on July 18, 2016, officers observed a man driving an Acura going above the speed limit and failing to break at a stop sign.

Police attempted to pull over the driver, later identified as Lopez, however the defendant did not stop and continued to drive at increased speeds.

Lopez then collided into another car at the intersection of Francisquito and Walnut avenues, which resulted in the three-car collision that seriously injured nine people, including a 7-year-old and 18- month-old girl.F

Following the crash, officials extracted Lopez from his vehicle, the prosecutor added.

The case was investigated by the West Covina Police Department and California Highway Patrol.
