February 14, 2019: Man Sentenced for Attacking Tourists at Hollywood & Highland

A 57-year-old transient was sentenced today to nine years in state prison for trying to kill a Russian tourist and attacking his family at Hollywood & Highland in 2015, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Donald Offerman pleaded no contest to one count each of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon and admitted an allegation of causing great bodily injury in a negotiated plea agreement. He was immediately sentenced by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Norm Shapiro.

Deputy District Attorney Mayra Ramirez prosecuted the case.

On Nov. 18, 2015, the victim and his family, who were visiting the area from Russia, were walking up a flight of stairs at the shopping and entertainment complex when Offerman came up behind the group and slashed the victim with a knife. Offerman then rushed toward the victim’s family and swung the knife at them multiple times.

A struggle ensued between Offerman and the victim, who was cut again by the knife, as the man’s family ran away. Two off-duty police detectives saw what happened and intervened, detaining Offerman at gunpoint.

Case BA441623 was filed on Nov. 20, 2015, but the defendant was found incompetent to stand trial a month later. On April 26, 2018, Offerman was determined to have regained competency and the criminal case proceeded.

The Los Angeles Police Department, Hollywood Division investigated the case.
