Compton Man Charged with Murder, Assault, Child Abuse

A 29-year-old man pleaded not guilty today to killing his girlfriend and shooting the couple’s child in their home nearly two weeks ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Juan Antonio Rodriguez (dob 6/24/88) of Compton has been charged with four felony counts in case TA145891: one count each of murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm and two counts of child abuse. The felony complaint includes a special allegation that the defendant personally and intentionally discharged a firearm, which caused great bodily injury and death during the commission of the crime.

Deputy District Attorney Abigail Baron of the Victim Impact Program is assigned to the case.

Prosecutors said Rodriguez and Mayra Portillo, 29, were in a long-term relationship and shared three children. On the morning of April 21, Portillo reportedly began to argue with the defendant, prosecutors said. During the exchange, Rodriguez allegedly pulled out a gun and shot at Portillo several times, striking Portillo and an 8-year-old daughter, who was in another room, according to prosecutors.

The couple’s other two children were unhurt during the violent assault, prosecutors added. Portillo was pronounced dead at the scene, while the child was taken to the hospital for medical treatment, prosecutors said.

Rodriguez was arrested the day of the incident and charged on April 24. He currently remains in custody on $3.28 million bail.

Rodriguez is scheduled to return to court on June 14 for a preliminary hearing setting in Department D of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Compton Branch. If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a maximum possible sentence of life in state prison.

The domestic violence case is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
